BGI Iserlohn – at the centre of the European sanitary industry

We manufacture pure brass and mercerize it with high-quality surfaces. Brass is the perfect  material for our products. It is easy to clean, environmentally friendly and resistant to corrosion.

Brass has been made from copper and zinc for over 3000 years. The region of Iserlohn in Sauerland is an important location in Germany for brass-works. It is rooted in calamine mining which has been testified since 1478. Calamine is one of the Greek ancient names for zinc ore. The foundation has been laid by the setting up of brass trade union in Iserlohn, in order to refine the brass industry.

In order to increase the rentability of the pits, the employers have put steady pressure on the workers‘ wages. The miners, however, had to work in unfavourable working conditions and faced expensive transport costs. 1869 it came to the industrial actions that were broken down due to the lack of unionization of the miners. In 1900 the mining industry, which has employed about 1000 people closed down as a result of high costs.

As of 1820 the development of calamine was focused on the inner urban areas. It has resulted in subsidence damage. Particularly affected was the region of Schillerplatz. In 1872 a Catholic church had to be knocked down as a result of the submergence of ground.
